| General Freebie FAQ |
| What is a Freebie?
On our site, a freebie is something that you (being the consumers) get for free, without any Usually this includes not getting any spam emails, spyware, or other annoyances, but such things are possible. A freebie is not when you see an ad on the internet that screams through your speakers “Congratulations, you have won an Xbox 360/Ipod Nano!” Here, we post only the best freebies on the main page, so you don’t have to search for them otherwise. For all the other freebies available on the internet, just check our Average Freebies page. Why would someone send me something for nothing? Often it is a promotional item for that company, or they are just trying to generate interest in their company/website. If at any point you are asked to complete “offers”, then it is not free at all. Don’t be sucked in by these free Xbox sites that are everywhere. Sometimes, we feature sites that are simply giving stuff away. You might have to be in the first 500 people, or some other random qualifyer, but hey, its still something free. How do I sign up for the free stuff?! Just follow the directions in the post, and that’s it. We sign up for everything in advance to make sure it isn’t an obvious scam or some sort of fraud. There may be some special instructions contained in the post, along with an uncanny sense of wit, and other fantabulous zazz. Do not put your address or contact information in the comments, because there is no point in getting your personal information viewable to just anyone. Any random posting of personally sensitive information will be deleted for your protection. What kind of things can I get for free? Tons of various products are offered for free. To date, we have received such things as a Sonicare toothbrush worth $70, $200 worth of chocolate from Hershey’s, Senseo coffee machine, and other useful and totally free things. Don’t think that all freebies are samples and ringtones, sometimes you can get really great, expensive stuff. What if I don’t like filling out form after form after form…? Well don’t you know, we have an answer for that as well! We use a free software called Roboform. It is completely free of spyware, malware, and any other bad ‘wares’, but is very useful for the freebie hunter. Using this software, you can sign up for all your freebies in a matter of minutes. To set it up, find the area that mentions “form filler” or something like that, and fill out your information. It can even do your credit card numbers, if you feel brave enough for that sort of thing. (I don’t) It also can manage your passwords, but if you are using Firefox (like you should), that is already handled for you. If you are unsure about Roboform, you can also use Google Toolbar. It will work with Firefox and Internet Explorer. How can I avoid spam? There are many steps you can take to prevent spam, but in the hunt for freebies, spam emails are inevitable. Instead of spoiling your previously spam-free email account (yeah, right) ,we recommend simply opening a second email account. Space is not an issue, because you aren’t going to be using it for anything other than the occasional confirmation click. Therefore, it doesn’t really matter where you get this email account. Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo are fine, just use whatever works best for you. After getting this email account, use it solely for freebies and signing up for things you know will send you unwanted mail. How do I prevent spyware/malware on my computer? I don’t believe in paying for software, so I personally will recommend two very comprehensive, simple, and free solutions for spyware on your computer. The first I have used for years, and is called Spybot Search & Destroy. It gets mediocre reviews, but can do things no other free software can to protect your computer. The second is called Ad-Aware, and fills in the gaps left by Spybot S&D. This will get you with a very competent and full-featured spyware solution, all for free. How can I avoid scams? With the above annoyances, anyone is susceptible to email scams, but it never hurts to get the information out there. If you get an email from Nigeria, the U.K., China, or the United Arab Emirates, DELETE IT. It is a scam, I dont’ care what it says. If you get an email that is too good to be true, then it is, so just delete it. You are not the winner of a lottery at random, the heir to a percentage of some Russian’s fortune, or helping any of these people that ask for it. See another great website for more details on this, plus an example of one of these emails. NEVER send your address, name, social security number, or bank account numbers to anyone over email. Paypal, your bank, Ebay, Amazon, etc will not ask for these things via email. For more examples check here. I cannot warn you enough, these emails will look very legitimate. |
